Is Flexible Working Finally Becoming Mainstream?

I crave flexible working arrangements. They are the future. Working where and when you want enables you to live your life to the max.

Why else would thousands of people be rejecting traditional working arrangements and becoming Digital Nomads?

They are funding their minimalist and eco-friendly lifestyles with digital contract work. They’re using the sharing economy to exchange services with others.

People just want to live their passions

Working remotely or with versatile schedules can no longer be the preserve of executives. People want to dedicate more time to their hobbies. This is only possible for most people with flexible working arrangements.

Move with the times or lose out on top talent

In future people won’t accept the old-fashioned working arrangements most of us have endured over the past few years.

They simply won’t sit in horrendous traffic jams for hours on end, slowly being poisoned by exhaust fumes and going quietly insane. They won’t go on causing danger to others by driving tired, or running on caffeine. Arriving home only to crash in front of the television.

That’s why I am SO excited about the flexible working news from PwC UK

According to Laura Hinton, Chief People Officer at PwC:

“People assume that to work at a big firm they need to follow traditional working patterns – we want to make it clear that this isn’t the case. In order to recruit the best people, we recognise that we need to offer greater flexibility, different working options and a route back in for those looking to restart their careers.

“We already encourage everyday flexibility for our people in how and where they work, but our Flexible Talent Network takes flexible working to a new level – allowing people to choose exactly how they want to work throughout the year. People in the network will get to spend their year their way, whether it’s because of caring commitments, entrepreneurs supplementing their income, people who want to travel or simply not work all of the year.

“Offering flexibility in how people work throughout the year is not only good for workers, but also for business, the economy and ultimately society. We’re likely to see a rise in people transitioning in and out of work throughout their careers and those organisations who responsibly support their people to do this will ultimately gain a competitive advantage.”

What an amazing job title by the way Laura!

This is amazing news for workers

A big and respected business is not only openly sharing their research into what people want and need, but they are actually doing something to address it.

Bravo PwC!

Businesses need to sit up and listen

I have no doubt that other businesses will be watching this space with interest. If you’re reading this – be bold and find your own way to bring some truly flexible work options!

Your people will be happier and more productive.
